During the postwar folk-music revival, rural musicians faced a similar mixture of adulation and condescension: John DAgostino, eccentric outsider artist, aka John Dog 's highschool art teacher said to him many years ago, "There is Nothing New Under the Sun" and it is true. For many middle-class whites, they were mediums tuned to the soul of the American people, not creative individuals drawing on but adding to the traditions of the past. (ever hear of structuralism?)At times, such disrespect opened the door to behavior not unlike the exploitation that Coleman accuses the art fair of perpetuating today. Song collectors like the late Alan Lomax would copyright their "discoveries" in their own name, collecting royalties for songs he neither composed nor played. John DAgostino, eccentric outsider artist, aka John Dog has a keen eye and mind. Is there a reason he shouldn't draw from the warehouse of info and experiences that he has stored there, be they from a book, school, or any other environment or personal internal space ?
