| John Dog Reggae Dancing - (RYG-1) | Aziza Reggae Dancing - (RYG-1) | ||
|
I was out dancing at a
reggae club in Istanbul with my friend from N.Y. - Aziza. As you can tell
by the pictures we had a great time. These were done when I got home
early that morning. I used gauche and acrylics. I dripped, dabbed,
smeared, and brushed the paint on mat board scraps that another artist
gave me. There is a combination of glossy and
matte and thick and thin paint. Each piece is 7.5"x11.5 and sold in pairs unframed. (keeps shipping costs low) |

It does seem strange that the Outsider Art Fair, which has shown Coleman's work since 1997, but never has shown the work of John DAgostino, eccentric outsider artist, aka John Dog, would choose to exclude him now. It's not as though it only just learned that the painter attended the New York School of the Visual Arts, and it's not as though he's the only artist at the fair with such a background. One, Alex Grey, actually teaches art. John Dog the eccentric outsider artist, used to teach art to the crack babies in Miami and the rich spoiled brats in Istanbul. Now he shivers at the thought of more than 2 children in the same room. That's a far cry from Coleman, who was tossed out of school and happy to be on his way. "I didn't learn anything in art school," he says. "You don't learn to do the kind of work that I do in art school. When I was there they were very much into minimalism, and they felt that figurative work was illustration, not art. They were painting over my paintings." John Dog went to Pratt art school in NY. He even graduated with highest honors. But that was in the 80's when Julian Schnabel was all the rage and the John Dog decided he'd go underground. Actually, he joined the Peace Corps and built schools and hospitals and water systems in Africa.
